Background

Dr. Gilfillan, serves as the Chief Executive Officer, President of Trinity Health Corporation. Dr. Gilfillan has been the Chief Executive Officer and President of CHE Trinity Health at Catholic Health East, Inc. since November 18, 2013. He serves as a Consultant of Geisinger Health Plan, Inc and Geisinger Health System. He served as Chief Executive Officer and President of Geisinger Indemnity Insurance Company. He served as Chief Executive Officer and President of Geisinger Health Plan, Inc.

He has been a leader in U.S. health care for more than 25 years, building successful organizations in the for-profit and not-for-profit sectors to deliver better outcomes for people and communities. He served as Executive vice president of insurance operations for Geisinger Health System. As the first director of the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation (CMMI), he launched the Center in 2010 and worked quickly with payers and providers to develop innovative models for improving patient care and reducing costs. He served as Senior Vice President of Coventry Health Care Inc. since August 2001. From October 2000 to August 2001, Dr. Gilfillan was an Independent Health Care Consultant. From June 1989 to October 2000, he held various positions with Independence Blue Cross, a health care insurance company in southeastern Pennsylvania, including Senior Vice President and General Manager of AmeriHealth New Jersey, a managed health care plan and subsidiary of Independence Blue Cross. Prior to that, he was Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer of Independence Blue Cross. From 1985 to 1989, he served as Medical Director for Medigroup Central Health Plan, a managed health care plan, and from 1980 to 1985, he served as Medical Director and practicing physician with The Winchendon Community Health Center, a health care clinic.

Dr. Gilfillan received his undergraduate and medical degrees from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. He completed a family practice residency at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis. He also earned an MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.
