This article presented findings from the 2012 American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons membership survey on implant identification processes by orthopedic surgeons prior to revision total hip and knee arthroplasty. 87% of surgeons reported regularly using at least 3 methods to identify failed implants pre-operatively; 10% of failed implants could not be identified pre-operatively; and 2% of failed implants could not be determined intra-operatively. UDI in total joint arthroplasty registry and UDI in electronic medical records were indicated practices to best support implant identification and save time.
